In Nadia’s Kaliganj assembly constituency, one name still echoes among the people—Nasiruddin Ahmed alias Lal Saheb, the former Trinamool MLA known for his dedication and work. Many even refer to him as the architect of a new Kaliganj. His sudden demise on February 1st due to a heart attack made the by-election in this seat inevitable.

Alifa Ahmed, his daughter, is a B.Tech engineer by profession. However, she was introduced to politics during her father’s lifetime. She completed her Madhyamik in 2003 and Higher Secondary in 2005 from Holy Family Girls High School in Krishnanagar. In 2009, she earned her B.Tech degree from BCET, Durgapur. Now she is 38 years old.

In the 2018 Panchayat elections, Alifa was elected as a member of the Nadia Zilla Parishad. Although she did not contest the latest Panchayat polls, she remained actively engaged with the people.

Upon being announced as the candidate, she stated, “My father was close to everyone. His office was always open to the people. He cared for the community and always thought of development.”

Former MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed was a devoted follower of Mamata Banerjee and a loyal soldier of the party since its inception. He became an MLA for the first time in 2011, during the political shift from the Left regime. In 2016, he lost narrowly by 1,227 votes to the Left-Congress alliance candidate Hasanuzzaman Sheikh. But he regained the seat in 2021, defeating the BJP candidate.

Nasiruddin Ahmed transformed various sectors during his tenure—revamping education, healthcare, drainage, and drinking water systems which had suffered under the Left rule.

Speaking to Sting Newz over the phone, Trinamool candidate Alifa Ahmed said, “My father left no stone unturned for development. But the unfinished tasks, I wish to complete with everyone’s support. I am thankful to our leader Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee for choosing me. I also express my heartfelt gratitude to the district and block leadership, and everyone who stood by us after my father’s demise. I wish to move forward with everyone’s blessings and prayers.”
