STING NEWZ: The West Bengal College Guest Teachers’ Welfare Association organized a press conference at the Kolkata Press Club to highlight the issues and demands of guest teachers across the state on 23 February 2026.

Speaking at the conference, the Association’s Secretary, Anupam Das, addressed various concerns faced by guest teachers. He stated that in 2019, under the direction of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the appointment of SACT teachers in government and government-aided colleges greatly benefited many educators. He expressed gratitude to the Government of West Bengal and the Chief Minister for that initiative. He also thanked college authorities and principals for appointing them as guest teachers whenever required.

However, he pointed out that due to limited college funds, guest teachers currently receive a very minimal monthly honorarium, making it extremely difficult to maintain a decent standard of living. He further stated that they do not receive payment during government-declared holidays, despite performing duties comparable to those of full-time teachers.

Under these circumstances, the Association placed a four-point charter of demands before the state government through the media:

  1. Regularization of service
  2. Continuation of service up to 60–65 years of age
  3. A structured and fair salary framework for all
  4. Protection against arbitrary termination and provision for reinstatement

The Association informed that they have already submitted their concerns to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, MP Abhishek Banerjee, Education Minister Bratya Basu, and other ministers of the state. They have also approached officials at Nabanna and Bikash Bhavan. According to the Association, they remain hopeful about positive progress at the administrative level.

Concluding the conference, the Association made a humble appeal to the Chief Minister to consider the matter with empathy and take necessary steps at the earliest, so that guest teachers can lead a stable and dignified life.

The Association also extended sincere thanks to the journalists present, requesting them to convey their message to the Chief Minister and the Government of West Bengal.
